CBS News Miami's Chelsea Jones took a look at how students spent the day and what led to the district's decision.

Several school districts in South Florida were closed Thursday ahead of Hurricane Helene, which was expected to make landfall along Florida's northwestern coast as a major hurricane. Broward, Monroe and Palm Beach counties have cancelled classed and closed their facilities.

In anticipation, Monroe County schools will be closed on Thursday, according to the Monroe County Emergency Management. The area expects sustained tropical storm force winds from 30 to 40 mph in the Lower and Middle Keys and 25 to 35 mph sustained winds from Islamorada to Ocean Reef in the Upper Keys.
